Sleep Dentistry

Patients often experience anxiety when visiting the dentist, sometimes because of a past traumatic experience. At Thompson Dental, we want all of our patients to feel comfortable, no matter what level of anxiety they are experiencing. We offer sedation dentistry, so you can feel more relaxed during your dental treatment.

Whether you need the lighter touch of laughing gas or the potency of oral sedation, we can provide a sedation dentistry option for you. We want you to have a pleasant dental experience, so you won’t be hesitant to schedule necessary dental procedures in the future.

Laughing Gas

One of our most popular sedation methods is laughing gas, a sedation method used to help patients relax. Laughing gas is administered with a breathing device throughout the treatment.

It has several great benefits, including the following:

  • Laughing gas leaves your body’s system as quickly as it enters, meaning you can drive to and from your appointment without any worries.
  • The gas has hardly any side effects, other than a quick relaxation for the patient. Because of this feature, laughing gas is considered the safest sedation method.
  • Laughing gas has no color or odor, which is a comforting feature for sensitive patients.

If you decide to have laughing gas during your appointment, our team can show you how the breathing mask works and help you feel comfortable. You will be conscious the whole time, so if you have any concerns, you can easily let us know.

Oral Sedation

The oral sedation method, sometimes referred to as oral conscious sedation, is a heavier sedation option. Whether your fear of the dentist feels heightened during certain treatments or if you come in for a treatment that takes a long time, oral sedation can help you relax during your appointment.

With oral conscious sedation, we provide you with a medication that is taken orally, usually an hour before your appointment. The medication makes you feel sleepy, so you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

During your appointment you remain conscious, so you can communicate with Dr. Thompson. However, you will be so relaxed that you may not remember much about your appointment. After you are finished, we can make sure you are doing well before you go home.

Why Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry has helped many patients get the care they need. Many people put off necessary dental treatment because of dental anxiety. Some of our patients have had traumatic dental experiences in the past, and we want to change the standard of how a dental visit should go.

When you know you can feel comfortable during your dental procedure, you are more likely to make the appointments you need most. We provide sedation dentistry, so our anxious patients are less likely to skip the procedures they need in order to stay healthy.

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Nitrous oxide, often called "laughing gas," is a safe and effective sedation option that helps anxious patients feel calm and relaxed during treatment. You breathe the gas through a small nasal mask, and within minutes you'll feel the stress melt away while remaining fully conscious and responsive. The effects wear off quickly once we turn off the gas, so you can drive yourself home. Nitrous is perfect for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety or anyone who wants a more relaxed experience.
