Porcelain Veneers

Feeling self-conscious about how your teeth look affects your appearance and even how you interact with the world. Porcelain veneers at Thompson Dental can transform your smile in just two visits, without the lengthy process of orthodontics or the invasive nature of major dental work.

What Are Veneers and How Do They Work?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of your teeth. We custom-design these coverings to match your teeth in color, shape, and size, creating the smile you've always wanted.

With veneers, our cosmetic dentists in Laguna Niguel can improve:

  • Discolored teeth that can’t be whitened
  • Chipped or worn enamel
  • Minor tooth misalignment
  • Teeth that appear too small or uneven
  • Gaps or spacing issues

Why Patients at Thompson Dental Choose Veneers

There are many reasons why tooth veneers are so popular with our patients, including:
Smile Transformation in Two Visits
Most patients complete their veneer treatment in two appointments. You'll enjoy a dramatically improved smile in a matter of weeks, not months, so you can enjoy your new smile faster.
Stain Resistant and Naturally Beautiful
Porcelain resists staining, so coffee, red wine, and other stain-causing foods won't discolor your veneers. Their translucent quality mimics natural enamel perfectly for seamless results.
Long-Lasting, Dependable Results
Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. Regular dental checkups and cleanings, and good home care keep your veneers looking their best year after year.

Frequently Asked Questions

While both veneers and crowns can improve your smile's appearance, they serve different purposes and cover teeth differently.

Coverage and Structure

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that bond to the front surface of your teeth, covering only what's visible when you smile. They require minimal tooth preparation—usually removing about 0.5mm of enamel. Crowns cap the entire tooth, covering all surfaces from front to back and top to bottom, and require more extensive tooth reduction.

When We Recommend Veneers vs. Crowns

Veneers work best for structurally sound teeth with cosmetic concerns, such as staining that whitening can't fix, minor chips, slight misalignment, or gaps.

Crowns are necessary when teeth have significant structural damage, large fillings, cracks, or have undergone root canal treatment. They provide strength and protection that veneers cannot, essentially rebuilding the tooth.

Durability and Cost

Crowns are stronger due to their complete coverage and thicker material, making them better suited for back teeth that handle heavy chewing forces.

Veneers, while durable, are typically used on front teeth. Crowns generally cost more than veneers due to additional material and preparation required.

Is a Veneer or Crown Right for You?

During your consultation, Dr. Sean or Dr. Zachary will evaluate your tooth's condition and discuss which option best suits your situation. Sometimes the choice is easy, such as a severely damaged tooth that needs a crown. In other cases, particularly for front teeth with moderate damage, both might work, and we'll help you weigh the pros and cons.

What to Expect When Getting Veneers

We want you to get the most out of your investment, so we will first evaluate your oral health to ensure your teeth and gums are in good condition. If you have untreated decay, gum disease, or damage to the tooth structure, we need to address those first. Once your underlying smile is healthy, you can expect the following steps:

  • Initial Consultation — We’ll discuss your smile goals and evaluate the health of your teeth and gums.
  • Tooth Preparation — If you decide to move forward, the next step is preparing your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers.
  • Digital Impressions — We use digital scanners to take impressions of the prepared teeth without the need for goopy paste.
  • Veneer Design — A top dental lab in our area customizes your veneers to our specifications for a perfect fit and natural appearance.
  • Quality Check — When we receive your veneers from the custom lab, we’ll check them for quality and fit, ensuring they meet our high standards.
  • Veneer Placement — Then we remove your temporaries and cement the final versions securely to your teeth.

What Are Composite Veneers?

These veneers use composite resin applied and shaped directly on the tooth’s surface. Composites don’t require the same preparation as porcelain, are less costly, and we can typically complete them in one appointment.

The downsides are that they don’t have the same natural-looking, glass-like sheen as porcelain and last only 5–7 years. Our cosmetic dentists will be happy to help you determine if composite or porcelain is right for your needs.
